“Boogie Down Rides” for Safety
Bronx Cyclists are hoping to draw attention to bicycling during the month of May. Artists, students, business-people, lawyers, doctors, families, and others who enjoy biking in the Bronx have come together to organize. They put together a series of events called the “Boogie Down Rides”. The goal of the events is twofold. Firstly, they aim to highlight the vast number of people who ride bikes in the Bronx. Secondly and more significantly, they aim to emphasis the vast amount of work still to be done in order to keep cyclists safe in the borough.
In an effort to reduce the number of personal injury victims, the borough already created nearly 60 miles of new bicycle lanes since 2006. However, cyclists point out many of the lanes are disconnected throughout the Bronx. As a result, navigating the Boogie Down’s infrastructure requires cyclists to risk injury as they venture out into traffic areas. The “Boogie Down Rides” call the borough to action to make the Bronx more bike-friendly. Though the paths have reduced injury-related and fatal bicycle accidents, biking enthusiasts would like to see that number virtually eliminated.
